Film screening spotlights local sewage concerns

Almost 200 people gathered at Scott Cinemas in Sidmouth for a screening of Jo in the Water, highlighting growing concern around water quality and sewage pollution in the South West.

The documentary follows Devon sea swimmer and campaigner Jo Bateman, who is suing South West Water as part of a wider class action led by law firm Leigh Day.

Directed by Pip Piper, the film has been touring the UK, combining personal storytelling with a focus on pollution and accountability.

Following the screening, a panel discussion featured Jo, Pip, Honiton and Sidmouth MP Richard Foord and Liberty Bridge, who is involved in the legal case.

The panel explored sewage discharges into rivers and seas, the ongoing class action against South West Water, and the role of regulators and government.

Audience questions focused on health risks, monitoring and enforcement, reflecting ongoing concern in coastal communities across Devon.
