Gardeners in Torridge have been reminded to renew or apply for the council green waste collection service when the new window opens on Wednesday, April 1.
The fortnightly collection service for garden waste such as grass cuttings, hedge clippings and prunings runs from June 1 to May 31, 2027 at a cost of £57 per year including a 240-litre green wheelie bin.
Torridge District Council says on average the service collects 376 tonnes of garden waste each month, reducing thousands of individual car journeys to recycling centres and helping cut congestion and emissions.

Once collected, all green waste is transported to Deep Moor, near Torrington, where it is shredded, composted, and processed. The resulting compost, mainly used in agriculture, is rich in beneficial fungi and microbes that support healthy soils and reduce the need for fertilisers and pesticides.
Councillor Chris Leather, the council’s lead member for operational services, said: “Using the service ensures your waste is handled responsibly and turned into valuable compost, helping to support healthier soils and benefit our local environment.
“Our crews collect it straight from your doorstep, saving you time and avoiding those extra trips to the recycling centre.”
To sign up or renew the service from April 1, go to www.torridge.gov.uk/gardenwaste or call 01237 428700 and select option 3. It is not possible to apply before this date.
For people interested in composting at home, the council is working with Get Composting, which can supply a range of low-cost home composters. For more information, please go to https://getcomposting.com
