Four South Molton churches came together on Good Friday today for a moving Walk of Witness.

The Churches Together event this morning saw groups of people begin processions from their churches in the town – the Anglican, Methodist, Baptist and One Way Community Church – and make their way to South Molton Pannier Market.

Christians mark Good Friday as a day or mourning to commemorate the execution of Jesus by crucifixion and his suffering on the cross.

At the Pannier Market, around 120 people gathered for a service that involving dramatised readings from Matthew's Gospel of the crucifixion of Jesus, interspersed with Good Friday hymns and accompanied by South Molton Town Band.

Last Saturday, people in the town were able to watch a live action Passion Play recreating the events of Holy Week in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago, which portrayed the final days of Jesus’ time on earth, from his entry into Jerusalem to the Last Supper.

It was directed by Christine Carter and produced by Helen Jarvis, who said of today’s Good Friday events: “The event was very moving, with time to pause and reflect on the torment Jesus willingly endured 2000 years ago.”

Baptist minister Andy Jarvis added: “It was wonderful to share in the marking of this significant day with other Christians from local churches - one big family united by Jesus.”
