North Devon Council has proposed to install new benches along a stretch of the Tarka Trail, in a move a local councillor has said will help those with mobility issues after much public interest.
Members of the public had reached out to the council regarding the lack of benches and rest areas along the ‘Tesco stretch’ of the trail.
County councillor for Braunton Rural, Graham Bell, told the Gazette he became concerned that the area lacked accessibility for people with mobility issues.
Mr Bell took to social media with a survey asking whether people would support the installation of benches, and received a positive response.
Mr Bell said: “We are fortunate to have a great number of walking and running groups in Braunton, they’re fantastic ways to socialise and exercise in our community. One of the groups recently asked me about the lack of benches on this section of the path.
“It’s a well-used section and very picturesque, but can feel quite daunting to people with mobility issues. In order to prove that there was a genuine public interest in having a bench here, I put around a very quick survey and had around 100 positive responses within days.”
Following the survey response, Mr Bell outlined his intentions to take the project further.
“The next steps are for council officers to source and price the delivery of a bench, and then I’ll have to find some funding to get it delivered.
“I am discussing funding with various sources, but there will be no cost to the council. Braunton Parish Council will maintain the bench as part of its normal groundskeeping
“The one or two benches will be made from recycled plastic and on a hardstanding,” he said.
Mr Bell took the time to acknowledge the mental health charity Ask For Jake, which was founded after the sudden death of Jake McPhail, and described how the new benches could act as a place for reflection.
He said: “As people will recall, this section of the Tarka Trail saw a horrible tragedy in 2019.
“I am hopeful that while this will be a positive thing for our active community, it will also be a place that people can reflect on that event and that the 'Ask for Jake' charity will be able to promote their vital work in supporting mental health.”
The Tarka Trail covers 180 miles of beautiful North Devon scenery, offering picturesque routes for walkers, and the UK’s longest traffic-free cycle path linking Braunton in the north with Meeth in the south of the region.
There are ancient villages and beaches to explore, and many refreshment options along the way, making this a fascinating day out for the family.
