A Devon school is looking to bolster its security with plans for taller and more robust gates.

Lady Seaward’s Church of England Primary School in Clyst St George wants to replace its main and secondary entrance gates to help improve site security.

The plans, submitted to East Devon District Council, involve increasing the height of both the main entrance gate and a secondary gate elsewhere on the site.

The school occupies a Grade II listed building dating from 1859, so the proposals include retaining the existing walls to which the gates are attached.

The plans, drawn up by Devon-based firm Noved Consulting, show that the current modern steel gates would be replaced with new steel gates of a matching design, but increased to 2 metres in height.

The secondary gate, which has been subject to damage due to “climbing and misuse”, would also be replaced with a steel gate matching the design of the main entrance and increased to 2 metres.

Noved Consulting said the changes would “provide improved robustness and durability” and “improve safeguarding and deter unauthorised access”.

It added: “The proposals are justified by the need to address damaged and ineffective gates and to meet safeguarding requirements for a school environment.

“There is also the opportunity to deliver improvements without altering historic fabric.”

The firm said the plans “represent a minor and sympathetic intervention that preserves the character and setting of the listed building, enhances security and safeguarding, and retains existing boundary features”.

The school was contacted for comment but was closed for the Easter holidays.
