Wild flower meadows should be granted the same protection as ancient woodland a conservation charity Plantlife say. Intensive grazing, ploughing and development have reduced wild flower meadows by 97% since the 1930s.

Plantlife have a plan that calls for the creation of 300,000 acres of meadows (the size of Bedfordshire) over the next 25 years and for ‘legislative protection’. The charity says that wild strawberries, ragged robin and harebell are wild flowers that have sharply declined, this has a knock-on effect with insects that depend on them.

Wild strawberries provide food for 51 species of butterflies and bugs.
