Are you brave enough for the Dartmoor Drop?

Are you brave enough for the Dartmoor Drop?

Calling all adrenaline junkies! If you’re up for an escapade that also contributes to a meaningful cause, look no further than the Dartmoor Drop abseil presented by Hospiscare. Hospiscare, an organisation dedicated to delivering specialised end-of-life care to patients within their own homes, is on the lookout for courageous volunteers ready to embrace an exhilarating abseil challenge. This endeavor aims to generate funds for Hospiscare's Hospiscare@Home service in Crediton, Okehampton, and North Dartmoor.

Scheduled for September 16th and 17th, 2023, the Dartmoor Drop abseil is set to occur at the Meldon Viaduct near Okehampton, offering breathtaking views of the moor and reservoir. Participants will descend a staggering 110ft from the viaduct's apex, guided by a team of skilled instructors.

This abseil event is open to individuals aged 12 and above. To secure a spot, each participant is required to pay a registration fee of £30 and commit to raising an additional £150 through sponsorship.

Hannah Thomas, a nurse affiliated with Hospiscare@Home and active in the area, shares: “We extend our services to patients in the final weeks of their life, grappling with various life-limiting conditions. Most of our patients present complex symptoms that necessitate Hospiscare's specialised expertise. Our role encompasses hospital-level care delivered within the familiar surroundings of one's home, encompassing not only practical and hands-on support but also emotional solace for patients and their families during this challenging phase.”

Hospiscare@Home made its debut in Crediton, Okehampton, and North Dartmoor in the spring of 2022, completing a remarkable 921 home visits to patients within the first year. This initiative falls under the umbrella of Hospiscare, a revered hospice charity recognised for its achievements and service since 1982 across Exeter, Mid, and East Devon.

With only approximately 19% of the charity's funding sourced from the NHS, Hospiscare relies on raising around £8 million annually to uphold its commitment to local end-of-life care. Events like the Dartmoor Drop abseil stand as critical fundraising endeavors.
