Notorious Audax ride across the hills of Dartmoor

The 30th anniversary of the Dartmoor Devil Audax was, once again, a superb success and a gruelling test of cycling endurance over some of the most rugged and remarkable terrain possible.

The route encompassed some of the best sights Dartmoor has to offer and, of course, some brutal climbs in the saddle, as riders took in Bovey Tracey, Drewsteignton, the infamous Widecombe Hill, Postbridge, Princetown, Holne and more from the Moor.

An Audax Ride is known internationally as a ‘randonee’ and a unique cycling experience. It’s not a race, but a ride that must be completed within a set time limit, including any stops to eat or rest. In most cases, riders have to maintain a minimum speed of 15km/h (some particularly long or hilly rides have a slightly lower minimum speed) and importantly a maximum speed of 30km/h. That's a little under 10mph and 20mph in Imperial measures.

The weather largely played ball, although there were a few heavy downpours added to the Devilish mix, and the odd tumble, but thankfully no bad injuries.

Initial donations raised £327 for the Devon Air Ambulance and any further surplus funds will be donated to Dartmoor National Park, the Cyclists’ Defence Fund and Dartmoor Rescue.

Organisers also thanked their hosts: The Dolphin Hotel, Lavender House Hotel and Fox Tor Café.
