After a competitive application process, The Wave Project has been selected to take part in the Big Give’s Christmas Challenge, with a fundraising target of £100,000! For one week only, any donation made to The Wave Project via Big Give will be doubled. And they need your help!
Funds raised will be used to support life changing Surf Therapy programmes for children and young adults around the UK.
During the campaign, donations to The Wave Project will be generously matched by The Big Give and EQ Foundation, meaning public donations can support twice as many children and young people. This year, The Wave Project are looking to raise a total of £100,000. To reach this target – and access the match-funding pot – they must raise £50,000 through public donations. This will ensure they can help 100 more children and young people next year when they get back in the water.
Founded in 2010, The Wave Project delivers surf therapy programmes to children and young adults across the UK. Based in Cornwall, the charity has expanded across the South West of England to North Yorkshire, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and London, and now includes 35 staff and over 1,500 trained volunteer surf mentors, with over 6,000 young people having accessed The Wave Project’s surf therapy courses to date.
As an evidence-based intervention, surf therapy is recognised by the NHS, local authorities and psychiatric services as an effective tool in improving the well-being, outlook
Jaz Bennett, North Devon Coordinator said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to be part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge. We are appealing to the public to give generously this year to help us reach our target to ensure that we can increase the number of children we will be able to help in the coming year.
“Record numbers of children and young people are seeking help for their mental health. 1.4 million young people were referred to children's mental health services last year - an astonishing 79% increase on pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
“Donations of any size can be doubled and will ensure that we can really turn around the lives of children as young as eight. Here in Devon, we help over 130 children and young people into the water, operating out of five beaches. I see first-hand what a difference surf therapy can make to the children who participate in our programmes, with increased confidence, resilience, self-esteem and a positive outlook. I would urge anyone who has ever thought about supporting us to help us with this campaign.”
Big Give is a match funding platform dedicated to making it easy for the public and funders to give to impactful charities. Founded by philanthropist Sir Alec Reed in 2007, they double donations to good causes — from ending poverty and hunger to climate action and gender equality. From good health and mental wellbeing to safe housing and strong communities. Since their conception, they’ve raised more than £247 million for charities all around the world.
Their motivation was sparked by the need to accelerate philanthropy and raise funds to tackle the world’s most challenging problems. Through the power of collaboration, every generous donation given on their platform can be doubled to make an even greater impact.
