The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT) is embarking on an exciting volunteer drive, inviting individuals passionate about preserving Dartmoor's heritage ponies and the rich history they represent.

As a registered charity, DPHT has outlined three primary goals: protecting Dartmoor ponies, advancing public education, and promoting the benefits of these iconic creatures for equine activities and conservation.

The volunteer initiative aims to build a dedicated community committed to safeguarding Dartmoor's unique beauty. Volunteers play a vital role in various aspects of the organisation, from maintaining the charity's headquarters to hands-on involvement in conservation projects, such as the management of moorland at Bellever Tor.

CEO Debbie Leach envisions a vibrant group of volunteers advocating for Dartmoor and its iconic ponies. Emphasising flexibility in commitment, Debbie has encouraged individuals to tailor their involvement to their schedules, fostering a collective movement united in championing Dartmoor heritage ponies.

In addition to conservation efforts, the drive addresses social challenges, recognising the power of volunteering to combat loneliness. Debbie stated, "Our aim is not only to preserve Dartmoor ponies but also to provide a meaningful avenue for individuals to find a sense of belonging and connection."

The DPHT has extended its call to farmers and pony keepers, acknowledging their vital role in the mission. The charity offers various avenues for participation, including volunteering time, giving talks at local events, or providing common land on Dartmoor for additional ponies.

Benefits of joining the DPHT volunteer movement include community membership, guided walks at Bellever for educational opportunities, and the chance to connect with like-minded individuals. Volunteers contribute meaningfully to the protection of Great Britain's cherished heritage.

Regardless of background or experience, the DPHT has warmly invited volunteers to join, not only to support Dartmoor pony preservation but also to discover a profound sense of purpose, camaraderie, and belonging.
