Dartmoor Zoo is celebrating the safe return of Malu, a Palawan Binturong, who had managed to escape his enclosure earlier this week.

The search for Malu intensified after sightings were reported by a local Cornwood resident on Tuesday, February 13.

Malu, who went missing at the end of January, was found in Cornwood, in a woodshed adjacent to an allotment, where he had sought shelter and sustenance.

The dedicated team swiftly located him and after being safely secured and transported back to the Zoo, Malu had shown signs of good health and contentment.

Binturongs, known for their incredible climbing abilities and distinctive popcorn-like scent, captured the hearts of many as the search for Malu ensued.

After an initial observation by keepers indicating that Malu hadn’t suffered any harm during his time in the Devon countryside, he was securely housed within his enclosure pending a full health check by veterinarians.

Equipped with heat, food, water, and a comfortable environment, Malu has now settled back into his familiar surroundings.

"Malu is a shy boy and takes some time getting used to people. Bananas are considered a good way to make friends, although he loves all fruit and is his happiest self when munching!" shared Animal Manager Maddy, reflecting on Malu's personality and preferences.

Malu, who joined Dartmoor Zoo from Get To Know Animals at Epping, Essex, London, on Wednesday,July 5 2023, quickly became a beloved resident.

Described as a shy yet friendly creature, Malu particularly enjoys bananas but happily indulges in all fruits.

"We are all obviously delighted that Malu has been found safe and well and our priority now is for his ongoing welfare and care. We will be working hard over the next few days to ensure that he is in good health and that there is no possibility of him escaping his enclosure again," stated CEO David Gibson

As Malu continues to be monitored by the caring staff at Dartmoor Zoo, plans are underway to review his enclosure to prevent any future escapes.
