A local MP has said Okehampton Community Hospital has made “good progress” recently, sparking optimism about its future.

Following a meeting involving Mel Stride, the Member of Parliament for Central Devon, representatives from the NHS, Okehampton Town Council, and NHS Property Services (NHSPS), Mr Stride has noted good progress has been made toward the disused ward within the hospital premises.

The ward in question has remained vacant since the removal of beds in 2017, a decision that followed a comprehensive public consultation.

Additionally, alterations such as the removal of permanent kitchen fittings in 2017 had raised concerns among residents.

However, NHS Property Services has provided reassurance that the necessary kitchen infrastructure could be reinstated if required in the future.

Mel Stride, who also serves as the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, expressed his confidence in the positive trajectory of Okehampton Hospital.

He said: “I know the future of the ward has been a concern for many residents in Okehampton. My meeting was an opportunity to get everyone around the table to discuss possible options and accelerate the work.

“I was very pleased to see the announcement from NHS Property Services of a £1 million investment into the hospital and the ongoing working repairs to the roof.”

Moreover, efforts are underway to enhance outpatient services in Okehampton, with discussions ongoing regarding both current and potential future clinics.

Mr Stride emphasised the importance of continued collaboration with local stakeholders, including the Town Council, to ensure that the options for the redundant ward are thoroughly explored and viable proposals are developed.

Councillor Christine Marsh, representing Okehampton Town Council and a former Mayor of Okehampton said: "We all recognise how important the hospital is to Okehampton and the wider community. The meeting with Mel Stride and various NHS representatives was a constructive session. I was pleased to be able to represent the views of the community, and it was helpful to hear from all the parties involved. We continue to explore options for the future of the hospital.”
