The North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (NDSART) received a significant boost to their operations with a generous £15,000 donation from the Sanctuary Freemasons Lodge. This contribution will fund two critical projects, ensuring the team remains equipped and ready to respond to emergencies in the challenging Dartmoor terrain.
The first project involves the replacement of the team's old and worn-out waterproof clothing. Previously supported by a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, NDSART is now set to place an order for high-quality waterproof personal protective equipment (PPE) from a premium outdoor brand.
This brand collaborates closely with Mountain Rescue England and Wales, ensuring the new gear meets the rigorous demands of search and rescue operations, thereby enhancing the safety of the team members.
The second initiative will replace the team’s water equipment PPE, which is nearing the end of its safety lifespan.
This renewal is essential for maintaining the operational integrity and safety standards of the team, particularly during water-related rescues.
Sanctuary Freemasons Lodge's donation comes from a legacy left by Len Jones, a former Marine and an avid lover of Dartmoor.
With the lodge's membership dwindling, the decision was made to close the lodge and allocate its remaining funds to charities that reflect Len’s values and passion.
NDSART was the choice, given their role in the Dartmoor community and their alignment with Mr Jones's dedication to service and safety.
A spokesperson from the rescue team said: “This generous donation will assist in keeping our team members safe all year round. It also allows us to continue supporting others in need during search and rescue operations.”
NDSART relies solely on donations from individuals and organisations to remain operational, receiving no government funding.
Contributions like this from Sanctuary Freemasons Lodge are essential for the team's continued ability to provide life-saving services in Dartmoor's demanding environment.
