RSPCA's 200-year bash: Celebrate at Little Valley!

RSPCA Little Valley

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is marking its 200th anniversary this year, and the Devon community is invited to join the festivities at Little Valley Animal Shelter in Exeter.

This milestone celebration honours two centuries of animal welfare advocacy and the legacy of the world's oldest animal welfare charity.

Founded in a London coffee shop by a group of individuals 200 years ago, the RSPCA has since become a global movement, championing the rights and well-being of animals.

From its inception on June 16, 1824, to receiving royal patronage from Queen Victoria in 1840, the RSPCA has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of animal welfare.

The Devon Branch of the RSPCA, established in 1842 in Exeter's Paul Street, has been a stalwart presence in the county for over 180 years.

In 1991, Little Valley Animal Shelter was founded by a group of locals, evolving into a cornerstone of animal care in Devon over the past three decades.

Today, the shelter continues to thrive, having rehomed tens of thousands of animals in recent years.

To commemorate this historic occasion, Little Valley Animal Shelter is hosting "ONE FUN DAY" on Saturday, June 15.

The day promises a range of family-friendly festivities.

Attendees can indulge in classic cream teas and fresh strawberries and cream, participate in fun games, and explore a nostalgic history display showcasing the RSPCA's journey over the past two centuries.

Adding to the celebration's ambiance, local musical talent Nathan Taylor-Platts will serenade the crowd with live performances.

Baking enthusiasts can showcase their skills in the big bake-off competition, vying for the coveted rosette with their best Victoria sponge or traybake creations.

Throughout the day, visitors are encouraged to meet the shelter's adorable residents, including cats, rabbits, and other small animals.

It's an opportunity to witness firsthand the care provided by Little Valley.

Entry to "ONE FUN DAY" is free, with on-site car parking available for £5 per car (bookable in advance).

All proceeds from the event will support the ongoing operation of the shelter, which requires over £1 million annually to maintain its services.

Emily Mayer, Shelter Manager at Little Valley, expressed gratitude to the community for their continued support: “It costs in excess of £1 million a year to keep our doors open and care for these animals. We would love to invite everyone who has supported us over the years to join us for One Big Day!”
