South West Water has announced that more than 200 runners laced up their shoes to race around Roadford Reservoir earlier this summer, raising thousands of pounds for local wildlife charities in the process.
The event, known as the first-ever Reservoir Run, was organised by South West Water in collaboration with South West Lakes Trust, drawing participants of all ages and abilities.
The runners competed across three distances - 2.5k, 5k, and 10k, each offering categories for juniors, open competitors, and veterans.
The event proved to be not only a test of endurance but also a powerful fundraiser, generating £2,000 for the Devon Wildlife Trust and Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
The water company said that these charities are crucial to the conservation of the region's unique natural habitats and wildlife.
Adele Barker, Chief People Officer at South West Water, said: “What we do matters, and just as water is essential to life - so is the support we provide to local communities and in protecting and enhancing our natural environment. This event shows we care, as do the hundreds of people who took part in South West Water's first ever Reservoir Run.”
Runners crossing the finish line were greeted with a wooden medal, a goodie bag, and a refreshing treat of strawberries and chocolate brownies provided by Strawberry Fields Farm. The reservoir, situated between Okehampton and Launceston, is not only a key source of drinking water for local residents, but also a nature reserve and recreational area for activities like sailing, windsurfing, and fishing.
Matt Lennox, Head of Activities at South West Lakes Trust, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to host the Reservoir Run at Roadford Lake. We’re no stranger to hosting big, organised events but this one in particular was so friendly and fun. The lake is such a beautiful place and really lends itself to running, cycling and walking. We’re looking forward to welcoming participants back in the future!”
Buoyed by the success of the inaugural run, South West Water is already planning to host more Reservoir Runs in the coming years, ensuring that both the community and the environment continue to benefit from these efforts.
