Plymouth diver, Tom Daley, has announced his retirement from competitive diving, bringing to a close a remarkable career that has established him as one of the sport's most decorated athletes.
The decision follows Tom’s recent achievement of a silver medal in the men’s 10m synchro at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Tom’s journey in diving began at the age of eight at the Plymouth Life Centre, where he was discovered by coach Andy Banks.
His Olympic debut came at just 14 during the Beijing 2008 Games, setting the stage for a series of notable achievements:
Throughout his career, Tom accumulated a total of 11 gold medals from World, Commonwealth, and European Championships, further cementing his status in the sport. Although he initially planned to retire after Tokyo 2020, Tom was persuaded to return in 2023 by his young son, leading to a successful final chapter that included his fifth Olympic medal in Paris.
Tom’s contributions to diving, LGBTQ+ rights, and charity were recognised with an OBE in the 2022 New Year Honours.
His final appearance in Paris, where he also served as a flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony, highlighted his enduring commitment to the sport.
