The Devon Hedge Group has launched the 2024 Devon Hedge Award, inviting farmers, landowners, schools, and community groups to showcase their efforts in healthy hedge trimming.
The award recognises those who contribute to creating wildlife-rich hedges in Devon's countryside.
Participants who demonstrate exceptional hedge management will receive a personalised certificate and an award plaque to display proudly.
The award aims to celebrate those who go beyond traditional hedge cutting methods, promoting practices that enhance the wildlife value of Devon’s hedges.
Several hedge management techniques can benefit wildlife while potentially saving costs. These include incremental trimming, which allows hedges to grow slightly larger with each cut, and trimming every two or three years to encourage the development of flowers and fruit.
Other traditional methods like hedge laying and conservation hedge laying are also encouraged.
Dr Rob Wolton, Chair of the Devon Hedge Group, said: “Every Devon hedge is different in some respect, and we are keen that the way that they are cut relates to needs and benefits of each individual hedge. Choosing the correct hedge trimming option can create great benefits for wildlife and can save money too.
“Devon’s hedges are of international importance as a historical, cultural, wildlife and landscape resource. We really hope as many people as possible get involved and apply for their award. If the award scheme goes a small way to instilling a sense of pride in our hedges and all the benefits they provide, then I will be a happy man”
The application process is simple; participants need to complete an online form, attach photos, and ensure their hedge meets basic criteria.
Applications are open until December 31.
