A grassroots initiative, Friends of the Dart, is making waves with their new Crowdfunder campaign aimed at tackling sewage pollution in the beloved River Dart.

The local community interest company, founded by concerned residents, has set an ambitious fundraising target of £30,000 to enhance their efforts in pollution testing and community outreach.

The group’s mission comes in response to rising concerns over health issues linked to river use, prompting them to take action when traditional measures fell short.

Friends of the Dart began by conducting their own pollution tests, a move that led to their recognition and the awarding of four designated Defra water quality testing sites.

This volunteer-driven initiative also resulted in a pilot water quality programme, which has been instrumental in highlighting the extent of the problem.

While the Environment Agency currently tests the Dart’s water quality from May to September, Friends of the Dart seeks to expand this to a year-round monitoring system.

The funds raised will support the addition of three new test sites and facilitate continuous water quality checks.

Their rigorous testing has not only contributed to local discussions but has also earned them a platform in national debates on environmental regulations and policy improvements.

The campaign, titled Let’s Stop Sewage in the Dart, is already gaining momentum, with a range of local businesses and organisations showing support.

The Sharpham Estate and other local contributors are offering a variety of rewards for donors, including books, cream teas, dance classes, cider, art, and canoe adventures.

In addition to testing equipment and laboratory analysis, the funds will be used to develop an app for real-time sharing of test results and reporting of pollution incidents.

The campaign will also fund the establishment of a River Ambassadors Programme, River Fly surveys, guided river walks, and an extensive social media campaign aimed at increasing public engagement.

Friends of the Dart is in ongoing discussions with South West Water to expedite necessary infrastructure upgrades to address sewage pollution.

The Crowdfunder, which will run until 20 September, represents a critical step in ensuring that the River Dart remains safe for both wildlife and the public.

As donations continue to pour in, Friends of the Dart hopes to hold the water company accountable and drive significant improvements to protect the river’s health and safety.
