Plymouth charity Trevi launches new service for mothers in recovery

The new Jasmine Mother and Child Centre

Plymouth-based women’s charity, Trevi, has announced a major transformation of its Jasmine Mother’s Recovery service, marking a new chapter in its mission to support mothers in recovery while keeping them united with their children. The rebranded service, now officially known as the Jasmine Mother & Child Residential Family Assessment Centre, has been Ofsted-registered and upgraded with new programs and facilities.

For over 30 years, Trevi has provided critical support to vulnerable mothers, particularly those struggling with substance abuse. The newly revamped Jasmine Mother & Child Centre offers a unique service where mothers can undergo treatment while remaining the primary caregivers for their children, a rarity in the UK.

In addition to extensive refurbishments, Trevi has introduced a strengths-based parenting assessment program aimed at helping mothers develop better parenting skills while addressing their substance use. This approach promotes family unity and stability, giving mothers a second chance to raise their children while managing their recovery.

Key features of the Jasmine Mother & Child Centre include:

  • Strengths-Based Parenting Assessment: This new program empowers mothers by enhancing their parenting skills while tackling substance use, allowing them to remain primary caregivers.

  • Personalised Treatment Plans: Each mother and child receives a tailored treatment plan delivered by an all-female team of Family Assessment Practitioners, Family Support Workers, attachment workers, and counsellors.

  • Holistic Support: The centre offers a trauma-informed approach to care, ensuring mothers receive the guidance needed to build a brighter future for themselves and their children.

The Jasmine Mother & Child Centre remains the UK’s only residential rehab facility dedicated specifically to helping mothers stay with their children while undergoing treatment. Last year, 83% of women left the centre drug- and alcohol-free, and eight out of 10 children were able to remain with their mothers after treatment.

Margaret Bersey MBE, the Registered Manager of the centre, brings over 40 years of experience in children’s services. She has been instrumental in the transformation of Jasmine into a full-fledged family assessment centre. “This rebranding represents our commitment to evolving with the needs of the women and families we serve,” said Margaret. “By incorporating a strengths-based parenting assessment into our services, we’re empowering mothers to be the best parents they can be.”

Trevi’s Jasmine Mother & Child Centre can accommodate up to seven families at a time, providing self-contained flats and a shared garden/courtyard. The centre continues to accept referrals from across the UK, with some self-funded placements available. Trevi’s nearby Sunflower Women’s Centre also offers continued support for families after they complete the Jasmine program, with a wide range of educational courses, workshops, and support services.

Trevi, founded in 1993, has transformed the lives of countless women and their families. Through services ranging from rehabilitation and health to housing and employment, Trevi’s holistic approach helps women move from surviving to thriving.
