West Devon Borough Council has announced the commencement of a new housing project in Lifton, aimed at providing affordable and energy-efficient homes for the community.

On October 3, Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Mark Renders, along with the council’s housing team, joined representatives from Plymouth Community Homes (PCH) to celebrate the start of construction on 16 new homes in the Oakdean development.

The development will feature a variety of one-, two, three, and four-bedroom houses, with PCH purchasing the entire set.

Of these homes, 10 will be available for social rent, while the remaining six will be offered for shared ownership through SO Living.

Gavin Sutton, Senior Project Manager at Plymouth Community Homes, said: “We are excited to soon be providing people with a local connection to Lifton an opportunity to move into one of the upcoming 10 rented or 6 shared ownership homes.

“The plan for the estate, with the generous open spaces including the village green centred with the old oak tree is pleasing. It is great to again be working with the team at Wain Homes who we know to build quality homes.”

The homes will be prioritised for individuals with local connections, addressing the specific needs of the community.

The Oakdean development, being constructed by Wain Homes, is named after an ancient oak tree located at its centre.

Lifton, near the historic town of Launceston, boasts a village shop, post office, and educational facilities, including primary and secondary schools, a college, and a nursery.

Cllr Mark Renders said: “Creating lower cost, high quality homes which our local people need is one of our top priorities, and we are delighted to welcome these new homes to Lifton.

“We want to make sure that people who want to remain in the places they love can do so - housing projects such as these is making that possible.”

The new homes are set to be available for rent or shared ownership starting in Spring 2025.
