Exeter’s commitment to supporting its independent businesses has reached a remarkable milestone, with sales of the Exeter Independent Gift Card surpassing £100,000. Managed by InExeter, the city’s Business Improvement District, the card offers a versatile and impactful way to “shop local,” supporting over 120 independent businesses across the city.

Launched as a way to strengthen Exeter’s local economy, the Exeter Independent Gift Card enables residents and visitors to enjoy everything from salon treatments to coffee breaks, dining out, and boutique shopping—all while supporting small, independent businesses.

“This gift card is a true asset to Exeter,” said Mattie Richardson, Projects Manager at InExeter. “We’re proud to be the only citywide gift card exclusively supporting independent businesses. It simplifies the decision to shop local and offers the community the gift of choice while helping businesses thrive.”

Local businesses have embraced the initiative, seeing tangible benefits from the programme.

“As a proud local business, Eat the Bird has greatly benefited from the Exeter Independent Gift Card,” said Adam Stock, Operations Manager at the popular restaurant. “This initiative not only encourages customers to ‘shop local’ but also strengthens our community. We’ve even used it as staff incentives—it’s a fantastic way to keep the local economy thriving and vibrant.”

Hayley Shaw, owner of vintage boutique Frocks in Swing Time, added: “The gift card has brought in new customers. It’s truly the gift of choice—there’s something for everyone, and every purchase supports businesses like ours.”

The milestone comes as Exeter gears up for the bustling Christmas season, making the gift card an ideal present for those seeking to support local businesses. Nicola Wheeler, CEO of InExeter, praised the community’s embrace of the card.

“Over £100,000 in sales is an incredible achievement,” said Wheeler. “And the impact extends beyond this—90% of recipients spend more than the card’s value, amplifying its benefit to our local economy.”

Colin Munro, Managing Director of Miconex, which created the Town & City Gift Card programme, also commended the success. “Exeter’s gift card is a shining example of a community committed to supporting its independents. As Christmas approaches, it’s the ultimate way to shop local and keep spending within the city.”

With more than 120 businesses participating, the Exeter Independent Gift Card offers something for everyone, making it a perfect choice for holiday gifting or personal use.
