Trevi launches city-wide ENOUGH campaign to end violence against women and girls

Trevi, the local women’s charity, yesterday launched its powerful city-wide campaign for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, with a clear and resolute message: ENOUGH. The initiative seeks to unite the city of Plymouth in taking action to end violence against women and girls, amplifying the call for change throughout the region.

In light of alarming statistics, including 3,966 recorded domestic abuse-related violent crimes in Plymouth in 2023/24 – a 6.9% increase from the previous year – the ENOUGH campaign highlights the urgent need for collective action. Domestic abuse now accounts for 37.4% of all violent crimes and 22.1% of all reported crime in the city.

Trevi is collaborating with key local organisations including Plymouth City Council, M.A.N Culture Plymouth, and Plymouth Argyle Football Club to increase visibility and engagement around the issue. The campaign will be seen across billboards, posters, and banners throughout Plymouth, as well as on social media platforms, creating a widespread call to action for everyone to get involved in the fight against gender-based violence.

Hannah Shead, CEO of Trevi, expressed the campaign’s vision:The message is clear: the movement is simple – everyone can get involved. Intimidation, harassment, and abuse have no place in our city. At Trevi, we witness the devastating impact of violence against women and girls, and we remain unwavering in our commitment to ending it.”

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Plymouth City Council, endorsed the campaign:
“The message of the campaign is simple: women and girls have had enough. We stand united in tackling violence against women and girls in Plymouth, and I encourage as many people as possible to take part in one of the many events during the 16 days. Plymouth says enough.”

Councillor Zoe Reilly, Violence Against Women and Girls Champion for Plymouth, added:
The ENOUGH campaign shows that working together is crucial in raising awareness, coming together as a community, and making a stand against violence. We must continue to be loud and united in protecting women and girls.”

M.A.N Culture, led by Matt Garrett, has once again partnered with Trevi in support of the campaign. Matt commented:“M.A.N Culture is committed to this cause because we believe it is time to say ENOUGH. We are working to bring about a change in attitudes by engaging with men and boys, and we’re focused on addressing masculinity’s role in violence. It’s time for men to be part of the solution.”

Plymouth Argyle Football Club’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Manager, Katie McManus, also expressed support, stating:“We are proud to stand alongside Trevi in supporting this important campaign. Football should be a safe space for everyone, and we are committed to zero tolerance for discrimination in sport and society. Violence against women and girls is unacceptable in any form.”

For women like Rachel, Trevi’s Sunflower Women’s Centre has been a lifeline. Reflecting on her own experience, Rachel said:“When I was in an abusive relationship, I felt so angry and ashamed. Coming to Sunflower helped me understand that it wasn’t my fault and allowed me to let go of my shame. The support I received changed my life forever. Sunflower gave me the strength to get up every day and look at myself in the mirror with kindness.”

This year’s ENOUGH campaign will culminate in a special event on Thursday, November 28, at the Elizabethan Gardens in Plymouth. Trevi will unveil the Secret Firefly Garden, a moving display symbolising resilience, healing, and hope for women impacted by trauma, violence, and abuse.

The garden will be illuminated by glowing fireflies, each representing the courage of women who have faced adversity. This poignant installation serves as a reminder of the collective strength of the community and offers hope to those who have endured unimaginable hardship.

As the ENOUGH campaign progresses, Trevi and its partners are united in demanding change and offering hope. Plymouth is coming together to say: ENOUGH.

The city is calling for an end to violence against women and girls. It’s time for everyone to stand up and make a difference.
