West Devon Borough Council and South Hams District Council are spreading festive cheer this Christmas season by offering free parking in various car parks across their towns. The initiative aims to encourage residents and visitors to shop locally, enjoy the holiday atmosphere, and support high street businesses as part of their respective Christmas shop local campaigns.
Residents and visitors can take advantage of free parking on the following dates and times:
West Devon:
Chagford: From 3 pm on Thursdays and Fridays in December; from 5 pm on Tuesday, 10 December for late night shopping
Hatherleigh: From 3 pm on Thursdays and Fridays in December
Okehampton: From 3 pm on Thursdays and Fridays in December (Mill Road only); all day on Thursday, 5 December for the Christmas Edwardian Fair
Tavistock: From 3 pm on Thursdays and Fridays in December (except Guildhall car park); all day on Saturday, 14 December
South Hams:
Dartmouth: From 12 noon on 14 December; from 4 pm on 19 December; all day on 22 December
Ivybridge: All day on 7 and 14 December
Kingsbridge: All day on 14 and 21 December
Modbury: All day on 7, 14, and 21 December
Salcombe: All day on 14 and 21 December
Totnes: From 1 pm on 11, 12, 18, and 19 December
Speaking about the importance of supporting local businesses, Cllr Adam Bridgewater, West Devon Borough Council’s Lead Member for Communities, said: “Christmas is such a magical time, particularly in West Devon. This parking offer gives a little extra time to enjoy choosing bespoke and individual gifts for your loved ones, enjoy some refreshments, and take advantage of the many events on offer. We hope you have a Merry Christmas.”
Similarly, South Hams District Council’s Executive Member for Community Services and Operations, Cllr Victor Abbott, said: “We want to celebrate Christmas and offer a bit of a boost with two free days of parking to help our local high streets. It’s an opportunity to soak up the festive atmosphere with music, Christmas lights, wonderful markets, and visits to Father Christmas. The free parking is just the cherry on top.”
In addition to free parking, residents and visitors can enjoy a range of festive events organised by hardworking town councils and community groups. From dazzling shop window displays to seasonal markets and holiday entertainment, there is something for everyone.
