InExeter team with Directors and stakeholders
Exeter city centre businesses have decisively voted to renew the InExeter Business Improvement District (BID) for a third five-year term, securing £2.8 million in continued investment for city centre improvements from April 2025 to March 2030.
Results announced today reveal that 90% of participating businesses supported the BID renewal, with 96% backing it by rateable value. The outcome underscores strong confidence in InExeter’s ability to enhance the city’s vibrancy, appeal, and resilience.
Since its inception in 2015, InExeter has been a driving force in revitalising the city centre. Funded by a levy on eligible businesses, the BID has delivered transformative projects such as:
Street cleansing services: Seven-day-a-week cleaning to maintain a welcoming environment.
Safety initiatives: Including the recently launched Community Safety Team.
Festive enhancements: Seasonal lighting displays that attract visitors and boost trade.
Greening and Public Art projects: Including vibrant new street art and green spaces to enhance Exeter’s aesthetic appeal.
The BID represents businesses across a range of sectors, including retail, hospitality, and services. Over the past decade, it has earned a reputation for fostering collaboration and innovation, ensuring Exeter remains competitive as a destination for shoppers, residents, and tourists.
During the four-week voting period from October 24 to November 21, 48% of eligible businesses participated. Of the 334 votes cast, 90% were in favour by number, demonstrating broad support for the BID’s vision and achievements.
Nicola Wheeler, CEO of InExeter, thanked businesses for their continued backing: “This resounding ‘yes’ is a testament to the strength of our business community and its commitment to a thriving, forward-thinking city centre. Over the past decade, we’ve built a strong reputation and achieved a lot together. Now, with the next term secured, we’re excited to continue this journey, bringing even greater support and enhancements to Exeter.”
With £2.8 million secured for the 2025–2030 term, InExeter aims to build on its successes with new and expanded initiatives, including:
Community safety investments: Further strengthening Exeter’s daytime, evening, and nighttime economies.
Enhanced Public Spaces: Expanding greening projects and introducing ten new street art installations.
Improved infrastructure: Maintaining the seven-day street cleansing service and supporting sustainable urban initiatives.
These efforts will ensure Exeter remains a vibrant and welcoming city, balancing economic growth with cultural enrichment and community well-being.
As a cornerstone of the city’s development, InExeter will continue to play a vital role in shaping Exeter’s future, celebrating its unique character and supporting local business ambitions. With the renewal secured, Exeter is poised to thrive as a destination that appeals to residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
