Rebecca Smith during the rail debate
A Devon MP has called for improved rail services to support the region’s economy and communities.
Rebecca Smith, MP for South West Devon, joined other Devon MPs in a parliamentary debate on 11 December to highlight the challenges facing the South West’s rail infrastructure and advocate for funding local projects.
Ms Smith emphasised that inadequate rail services hinder growth in the region, which is home to a vibrant economy and expanding blue and green industries.
“The South West is not just a tourist attraction. People live there, and there is an enormous opportunity for even further growth,” she said during the debate.
The discussion covered key priorities for South West rail users, including the completion of resilience works at Dawlish, developing a business plan for the Tavistock-Plymouth line, and improving platform lengths.
Ms Smith also urged CrossCountry services to add a stop at Ivybridge, enhancing connectivity for local commuters.
The debate also touched on the Government’s allocation of £30 million to address disruption caused by HS2 works at Old Oak Common.
While Ms Smith welcomed the investment, she questioned its impact on the South West and suggested local rail upgrades could deliver more immediate benefits for residents and businesses.
Ms Smith joined other Devon MPs in pressing for clarity on the Government’s long-term rail strategy, including the implications of bringing rail operators into public ownership.
She argued that any changes must address the region’s unique challenges to ensure fair and effective outcomes.
The debate highlighted the importance of strategic rail investment to improve connectivity, boost local economies, and better serve Devon’s growing population.
