Retired Detective Superintendent honoured with King’s Policing Medal

Devon and Cornwall Police veteran Mike West

Devon and Cornwall Police veteran Mike West has been awarded the King’s Policing Medal in the New Year’s Honours list in gratitude to his outstanding contributions to policing over a distinguished 30-year career.

The medal, awarded for a specially distinguished record in policing, reflects Mike’s tireless dedication to the communities he has served since joining the force in May 1994.

Mike began his policing journey in Torquay, where he earned the 1995 Police Probationer of the Year Award. He went on to serve in various critical roles in Plymouth, the Public Protection Unit, and the Serious and Organised Crime Branch.

A significant portion of his career was dedicated to the Major Crime Investigation Teams, where he led investigations and operations involving homicides, kidnappings, extortion, serious sexual offences, and counter-terrorism cases. Mike retired as Detective Superintendent and Head of the Force’s Major Crime Branch, having achieved the highest level of national accreditation for Senior Investigating Officers. He is also an experienced Senior Identification Manager, specialising in disaster victim identification and mass fatality incidents.

Throughout his career, Mike earned numerous commendations from the Judiciary, Chief Constables, and Policing Commanders, acknowledging his leadership and professionalism. In 2021, he received the National Police Chiefs’ Council Senior Investigating Officer of the Year Award for his dedication to delivering justice and supporting victims and their families.

Chief Constable James Vaughan spoke of Mike’s achievements and congratulated him on his latest award, saying: "Mike has enjoyed a long and distinguished career and successfully led some of the most complex, high-profile, and high-risk major crimes in Devon, Cornwall, and the South West Region for over two decades. He is highly respected by colleagues and partners alike. I wish him a long and happy retirement."

When asked about his feelings regarding this latest accolade, Mike said: "I am truly honoured and humbled to be included in the King’s New Year’s Honours List. It has been a privilege to work alongside the dedicated and professional officers and staff I have met throughout my career. The care and expertise they bring to victims, families, and communities affected by major crimes are exceptional."

He also thanked his family for their unwavering support: "Their understanding during extended periods of absence has made my career deeply rewarding. I extend my heartfelt thanks to them, my colleagues, and friends who have supported me throughout this journey."

Mike West’s career has left an indelible mark on the force and the communities he served. His dedication, professionalism, and compassion have set a standard for policing excellence, earning him a well-deserved place among the country’s most distinguished officers.
