In 2024, Devon & Cornwall Police transformed the proceeds of crime into positive community impact, reinvesting £22,000 into charities, groups, and projects across Teignbridge, Torbay, and the South Hams. This funding, derived from the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA), is part of a broader initiative to use assets seized from criminals to support local good causes.
Superintendent Hayley Costar, who chairs the POCA panel, said: “It’s fantastic that we are able to use money seized from criminals, often those who have caused significant harm to our communities, to give back to local people so it can be used for good. The funds are directed toward causes that reduce crime and antisocial behaviour, support vulnerable individuals, and enhance community wellbeing.”
Among the beneficiaries in 2024 were:
Totnes Rural Area Youth Engagement Project (TRAYE): Awarded £500 to support its mission of connecting socially isolated children up to the age of 17.
Homeless in Teignbridge Foodbank (HITS): Received £1,000 to help provide food packages to individuals facing homelessness and crisis situations.
REFUGE4PETS: Granted £1,000 for its unique service that fosters animals belonging to domestic abuse victims while families transition into safe housing.
The South Devon contributions are part of the £76,000 awarded by Devon & Cornwall Police in 2024 to local causes across the force area. The funds aim to address key challenges such as crime prevention, community engagement, and support for vulnerable groups.
POCA, introduced in 2002, allows law enforcement to seize the assets of criminals involved in unlawful activities such as drug trafficking, fraud, and organised crime. The reinvestment of these funds represents a dual benefit; removing ill-gotten gains from offenders while empowering local communities.
As the force looks ahead to 2025, Superintendent Costar expressed gratitude to the organisations making a difference: “Thank you to everyone involved in the charities and projects who drive positive change within our communities; your work is so incredibly important. We will continue to support many more causes as we head into 2025.”
Community groups and charities interested in applying for POCA funding are encouraged to reach out to their local neighbourhood police teams. Devon & Cornwall Police provide an online tool to help residents locate their nearest station and officers: https://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/
