Rumours have been circulating that Plymouth Argyle’s First Team Coach, Kevin Nancekivell, could be awarded the freedom of the city.

The Barnstaple-born coach has become a pivotal figure for Argyle, stepping into caretaker roles during challenging periods.

Nancekivell first stepped into caretaker duties after Steven Schumacher's departure and later took on the role again following Ian Foster’s dismissal at the close of the 2023/24 season.

Most recently, he partnered with club captain Joe Edwards to guide the team after Wayne Rooney’s exit in the 2024/25 season.

Their tenure included three matches, achieving two league draws and a memorable FA Cup Third Round victory away to Brentford on 11 January.

The Gazette understands that Nancekivell has been recommended for the honour, alongside former Plymouth MPs Sir Gary Streeter and Linda Gilroy.

Plymouth City Councillors are set to vote on the proposal at an extraordinary general meeting on Monday, 27 January.

A council spokesperson said: “We will be issuing communications after the meeting on Monday with photos alongside the Lord Mayor. You should also be able to watch the meeting livestreamed on our YouTube channel.”

For Argyle fans, this potential honour is a testament to Nancekivell’s dedication and contributions to the club.

Growing up in North Devon, he began his football career at Bideford before joining Tiverton Town in 1996.

If the recognition is confirmed, it would solidify his status as a local hero to the Green Army.
