Bovey Castle launches 'Get into Golf' Academy to inspire next generation golfers

Bovey Castle, a five-star hotel renowned for its historic golf course and recent hosting of major PGA events, is stepping up its commitment to nurturing future talent with the launch of its new 'Get into Golf' Academy. The academy, aimed at golfers aged 16 and under, offers tailored coaching by PGA instructors on the hotel’s 18-hole championship golf course.

The academy kicks off with a three-day course during the February half-term, running from 17th to 19th February. Each day features two-hour sessions beginning at 11am, designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to golf, with further courses planned for the future.

On the first day, participants will learn the fundamentals of the sport, including the rules of the game, proper grip, and stance techniques. Interactive games such as golf bingo and target practice challenges are incorporated to reinforce learning in a fun, engaging manner.

Day two focuses on developing swing technique through drills aimed at improving balance and posture. The session also includes a “longest drive contest” that introduces a competitive element to help refine driving skills.

The course concludes on day three with dedicated chipping and putting practice around the greens. Youngsters will participate in exercises like the “par-18” and “chipping ladder” drills, culminating in the “putt putt challenge” to hone their short game.

The launch of the academy comes on the back of significant growth in the club’s membership, which has surged by 66% year-on-year under the guidance of Rob Selley, Bovey Castle’s PGA Golf Manager. Selley said the club had invested in facilities, noting a recent £40,000 upgrade to their new all-weather driving range.

“We’re really proud to see more locals taking up a membership and enjoying our facilities,” said Rob Selley. “Our junior academy is perfect for youngsters eager to learn the game in a friendly and supportive environment. By keeping group sizes small, we ensure that every participant receives personalised coaching and meaningful advice to help them develop their skills.”

Bovey Castle’s rich golfing heritage and commitment to excellence are well established, with the club frequently hosting prestigious events such as the South West PGA Open Series. The “Get into Golf” Academy builds on this legacy by investing in the next generation of players and fans, ensuring that local children have the opportunity to experience all the benefits of this timeless sport year-round.
