Exeter Canal and Quay Trust seeks new Chair to lead heritage revival

The Exeter Canal and Quay Trust (ECQT), a charity dedicated to restoring and celebrating the historic waterfront of Exeter, is inviting applications for the position of Chair as its current Independent Chair, Alan Williamson, prepares to retire. Formed in 1981, the Trust has played a pivotal role in renovating, developing, and leasing the heritage quayside properties in and around Exeter Quay, alongside funding and organising a host of cultural events that showcase the area’s remarkable history.

Over the decades, ECQT has transformed Exeter’s waterfront into a vibrant hub of arts and culture. The Trust manages the Exeter Custom House, a Grade I Listed building that now serves as a centre for creative activities and exhibitions. In addition to preserving historic buildings, the charity has been instrumental in promoting the area’s heritage through events such as the Exeter Heritage Harbour Festival, the Quayside Shanty Festival, and the Summer at the Quayside activity programme.

The Trust’s commitment extends to its Cultural Partners Programme, which collaborates with organisations like Art Work Exeter and Literature Works to deliver innovative projects. These partnerships have enriched the quayside with markets, live gigs, and various cultural events held under the historic Transit Shed.

As the ECQT prepares to enter a new phase of growth and innovation, it is seeking a new Chair with a strong background in governance, financial acumen, and experience chairing meetings. The ideal candidate will bring both emotional intelligence and a deep commitment to the heritage and future potential of Exeter’s waterfront.

The recruitment process is being managed in collaboration with Shine Charity Recruitment. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Jackie Dawkins at jackie@shinecharityrecruitment.co.uk for an informal discussion about the role.

The ECQT Board comprises both independent trustees and members appointed by Exeter City Council. After many years of dedicated service, Alan Williamson’s retirement marks the end of an era. The new Chair will be expected to guide the Board through an exciting future, ensuring that the Trust continues its vital work in preserving and enhancing the cultural and historical significance of Exeter’s quayside.

For further information about the role and the Trust’s ongoing initiatives, visit the Exeter Canal and Quay Trust website at www.exeterquay.org, or contact the Trust directly at info@exetercustomhouse.co.uk.
