Girlguiding Okehampton has launched a fundraising campaign to build a new Guide hall on its original site opposite Okehampton Skate Park.

The previous hall, which had fallen into disrepair, was demolished over a decade ago.

Now, the group is working towards creating a bigger and better space to support its Rainbow, Brownie, Guide, and Ranger units, as well as provide a community facility open to all.

To aid the fundraising effort, Girlguiding Okehampton is hosting a Dinner and Dance event on Saturday, 5 April, at Okehampton Conservative Club.

Tickets cost £20 and include a three course meal and live music.

The dress code is formal attire.

Bookings can be made using the guide hall email address.

The group is also seeking volunteers and raffle prize donations to help reach their goal.

Nicki Furness, leader of 2nd Okehampton Rainbows and 1st Okehampton Guides and Rangers, highlighted the group’s long-standing history: “1st Okehampton Guides was the first unit of Guides to open in Devon and one of the first in the South West, then 1st Okehampton Brownies opened shortly afterwards. They currently have 113 and 110 years of history each. Girls travelled on the train to attend meetings back then. Hundreds of young ladies have grown up with Guiding in Okehampton and will have memories for a lifetime. As an organisation, we are very proud of our history but also excited about our future.”
