The sanctuary takes on specialist equine training
A horse and pony sanctuary with sites across Devon has taken part in a specialist training day aimed at enhancing staff skills in equine welfare and rescue.
The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, which hosted the event, used a full-sized horse mannequin funded entirely by its supporters.
The mannequin, named Max, purchased last year, has become an invaluable training tool, helping staff and veterinary professionals gain hands-on experience in equine rescue scenarios.
The practical training session, held in collaboration with the British Animal Rescue and Trauma Association (BARTA), was one of three large animal rescue events across the UK attended by newly qualified vets.
BARTA, known for its expertise in horse welfare training, provided essential skills and knowledge to attendees, strengthening their ability to deliver effective care and respond appropriately in emergencies.
The training included practical demonstrations, allowing participants to experience the challenges of real rescue situations.
Using a horsebox and tractor, vets were encouraged to take initiative and gain the hands-on experience necessary for their future roles.
BARTA Director Jim Green said: “Veterinary professionals play an important role alongside emergency responders when communities, including their animals, need help. This foundation course helps vets understand how the emergency services structure their response and how vets are seamlessly integrated into that model.
“Additionally, internationally recognised animal rescue techniques were practised, and discussions were held on the best approach for equine casualties in various scenarios. From experience, we know this builds confidence and professional knowledge on both sides. We are really grateful to partner with The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, which provides an exceptional regional venue for training.”
Richard Frost of Tor Equine Vets, based at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary’s Newton Abbot site, also supported the event. He said: “The BARTA training is excellent and should give these vets real confidence when they face potentially stressful rescue situations. It’s been a fantastic day helping this group of recently qualified vets understand their role in large animal rescue.”
Gillian Gratton, Welfare and Rehoming Coordinator at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, said the charity was delighted to host the training day. “It’s crucial that those working in equine welfare have access to the best training available, and partnering with BARTA helps us achieve that. The practical demonstrations using the horsebox and tractor brought the training to life, allowing vets to apply what they learned in real-world scenarios."
The sanctuary reaffirmed its commitment to promoting best practices in equine welfare through collaborative training initiatives.
It said the event not only equipped attendees with vital skills but also strengthened connections within the equine welfare community.
