Bergerac reboot hits screens with new twist, but old fans are divided

John Nettles praises new Bergerac, but stays away from reboot to avoid 'muddying the waters'

The BIG Interview: Actor John Nettles OBE – Star of Bergerac, Midsomer Murders and Poldark

John Nettles played the original Jim Bergerac, a role he made iconic from 1981 to 1991

The much-anticipated revival of the classic detective series Bergerac premiered on February 27 on U&Drama, reintroducing audiences to the enigmatic detective Jim Bergerac, now portrayed by Damien Molony.

The original series, which aired from 1981 to 1991, featured John Nettles in the titular role and garnered a dedicated fanbase.

Nettles, now 81, has since retreated from the limelight to a life in Devon.

Living in a 15th-century longhouse with his wife, Cathryn Sealey, Nettles has embraced the tranquility of the countryside since 2010.

Reflecting on his move from city life, he told Hello! Magazine that he had a noisy donkey, and that it was time for a change.

Despite his retirement, Nettles remains connected to his acting legacy.

Speaking to The Telegraph, he expressed admiration for Molony’s portrayal, stating: “I'm jealous because he's so good.”

However, he declined a cameo in the reboot, believing his presence might “muddy the waters,” as he told The Scottish Sun.

The reboot has elicited mixed reactions from audiences and critics alike.

Some viewers have praised its modernised approach and deeper character development, while others have criticised changes to beloved characters and the series' tone.

Notably, the transformation of Charlie Hungerford from a charming male rogue to a female character has sparked debate among longtime fans, according to The Sun.

Molony, aware of the legacy he steps into, shared insights into his approach with Radio Times, saying: “I wasn't trying to copy John Nettles's Bergerac.”

He emphasised the reboot's darker tone and the opportunity to delve deeper into character development over the six-episode arc.

Despite the fresh take, certain iconic elements, such as Bergerac’s classic car, remain unchanged, serving as a nod to the original series.

As the new Bergerac unfolds, it aims to balance the cherished elements of its predecessor with contemporary storytelling, inviting both old fans and new viewers to embark on a journey through the mysteries of Jersey once more.
