Nestled in the heart of Dartmoor, the Moretonhampstead Community Allotment has become much more than a place to grow vegetables, it is a space for healing, connection, and wellbeing. Established by the charity Wellmoor, the allotment is part of an initiative to support both physical and mental health through outdoor activity and community engagement.
The idea for the allotment originated from local GPs who recognised the therapeutic benefits of spending time in nature. They envisioned a space where patients could be “prescribed” gardening as part of their recovery from various health conditions. In response, Wellmoor transformed a patch of local allotment land in 2019 into a flourishing community resource, which has since become a vital part of many lives.
The allotment is now a thriving community hub where volunteers from diverse backgrounds come together to plant, nurture, and harvest. One participant described the experience as life-changing:
“I have been involved for two years. Mixing with others, enjoying the beauty of the surroundings, and growing vegetables has been so rewarding. We’ve cooked together and even sung around the fire pit. It’s been a truly positive experience.”
For those struggling with anxiety, depression, or chronic illness, the allotment offers a sanctuary. Another volunteer said: “When I joined, I was new to the area and found social situations overwhelming. But working alongside others in the allotment has been fun and relaxed. I feel like I belong, I’ve made great friends, and I’ve learned so much about growing and cooking healthy food.”
Over the years, the allotment has evolved into a cornerstone of the local community. It hosts events such as autumn celebrations and cooking sessions using homegrown produce. A portion of the harvest is donated to the local Community Larder, extending the benefits beyond the immediate group of volunteers.
Workshops on low-cost cooking, sustainable gardening, and creative activities also ensure that the allotment is a place of learning as well as connection. The space welcomes people of all ages and abilities, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity in community-driven projects.
Wellmoor plans to expand its impact by strengthening its partnership with the Chagford Community Allotment. A series of horticultural and creative workshops are set to launch, designed to bring people together, foster knowledge-sharing, and promote wellbeing. Both allotment sites also have plans to develop family-friendly areas and engage more young people in their initiatives.
For those looking to meet new people, improve their mental and physical health, or simply enjoy the beauty of Dartmoor, the allotment welcomes all with open arms - and a pair of gardening gloves.
