The Tavistock branch of Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team has officially unveiled a new control vehicle and opened a state-of-the-art garage following months of fundraising and hard work.

The unveiling took place on Thursday, 6 March, marking a significant milestone for the team.

The new control vehicle, which has been converted through the Rescue 50 Appeal, is named 'Terry' in honour of former team member Terry Bumford, a distinguished ex-Royal Marine and life member of the team.

Terry passed away in 2021 and is much missed by the team.

“It was wonderful to have some of Terry’s family present and for his daughter Wendy to officially commission the vehicle in style,” said a team spokesperson.

The conversion ensures the team is better equipped to respond to emergencies across Dartmoor.

In addition to the control vehicle, the team also opened a newly built garage, made possible by the Rescue Centre Rebuild Appeal.

The new garage, funded by the Rescue Centre Rebuild Appeal, now houses the team’s complete fleet of vehicles.

The garage opening was officiated by Councillor Debo Sellis, Mayor of West Devon Borough Council.

The accomplishments were made possible thanks to financial support from West Devon and Tavistock Councils, local groups, and individual community members.

Special recognition was also given to Dave Painter, who provided expertise during the conversion of the control vehicle.

“A special mention was made of Dave Painter, from outside the team, for his expertise in sorting out the circuitry during the control vehicle conversion,” said the spokesperson.

The Tavistock team is now focusing its efforts on raising funds for the replacement of two aging Land Rovers to continue providing vital services to the community.
