Staff and volunteers attend this year's opening ceremony
The Museum of Dartmoor Life has officially reopened its doors to the public for this season, following a celebratory launch event led by Mayor Allenton Fisher. Volunteers and staff cheered as the Mayor cut the ribbon, marking the museum's return to welcoming visitors.
Debbie Pritchard, Chair of Trustees at the Museum, thanked the Mayor and Okehampton Town Council for their continued support: "Without the Council's backing, the Museum would face significant challenges. We are incredibly grateful for their ongoing commitment to preserving Dartmoor's rich history."
Mayor Fisher praised the dedication of the museum's staff and volunteers, acknowledging the vital role the Museum plays in both Okehampton and the wider Dartmoor area.
"The Museum is a cherished part of our town's cultural heritage," he said. "Its presence is important not only for preserving local history but also for attracting visitors to the area. I wish you a fantastic season ahead with plenty of people discovering all that Dartmoor has to offer."
The Mayor also congratulated the Museum team on their newly launched exhibition, titled 'A Shroud for Mother Nature – Is Dartmoor Dying?' The thought-provoking display explores the environmental challenges facing Dartmoor, offering visitors a powerful insight into the region's fragile ecosystem.
Kristy Turner, Museum Manager and Curator, encouraged locals to embrace the Museum as a community hub.
"We really hope many local people will come and visit us this year," said Ms. Turner. "Admission is just £6 for adults, and that comes with a free access card allowing unlimited visits throughout the year. Families can bring children to enjoy crafts, colouring activities, or simply to explore the exhibits at their own pace. Visiting museums isn’t just informative – it’s great for your wellbeing too."
