Leslie Gilbert, a lifelong farmer and preacher, celebrated his 99th birthday with family and friends at Hatherleigh Nursing Home in Okehampton, Devon.
Born on March 30, 1926, in Lower Stowford, Halwill, West Devon, Leslie grew up on a farm. He left school at 14 to work alongside his parents and later became a local preacher for the Methodist Church at the age of 17.
His commitment to the church and his community remained strong throughout his life.
During the Second World War, Leslie continued to farm despite being initially called to work in the mines.
He raised prize-winning Large White pigs and became an active member of local agricultural organisations, eventually serving as chairman of the National Farmers’ Union branch.
In 1955, Leslie married his first wife, Olive.
Together, they built up their farm and eventually purchased it from the Clinton Estate.
The couple had four children, Geoffrey, Marilyn, Michael and Kenneth, all of whom were involved in farm life from a young age.
After Olive’s passing in 1989, Leslie found new joy in the arrival of grandchildren in 1991.
Leslie also dedicated much of his life to his faith, serving as an ambassador for the Leaders of Worship and Preachers Trust, where he was honoured for 70 years of service. He was also a member of a local choir, where he met his second wife, Lucy.
They married in 1995, and Leslie has since enjoyed 30 years of marriage with her.
After leaving the farm, Leslie and Lucy moved to Hatherleigh, where they adapted to town life.
Over the years, they travelled to Tasmania, Perth and Bangkok to visit family.
Leslie is now a great-grandfather to four, with another expected later this year.
At Hatherleigh Nursing Home, Leslie is known for his warm and engaging personality.
Lucy visits him most days, and the couple regularly takes part in activities together.
Leslie enjoys animal therapy visits, attending church services, and participating in performances by the local choir.
He also spends time reading farming books and gardening, but his greatest joy is spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
To mark his 99th birthday, staff at Hatherleigh Nursing Home organised a special afternoon tea.
The event included decorations, a homemade spread, and a family member’s reading that highlighted Leslie’s faith and the important role it continues to play in his life.
When asked about the secret to his long life, Leslie simply said, “Having a good woman.”
Leslie Gilbert’s 99 years have been shaped by his dedication to farming, faith, and family. He remains a cherished figure in the community and continues to inspire those around him.
