The Rt Hon Mel Stride MP has been awarded a knighthood in the April 2025 Resignation Honours list following Rishi Sunak’s departure as prime minister.

The former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions was recognised for political and public service.

Mr Stride currently serves as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, a position he has held since November 2024 as part of Kemi Badenoch’s Shadow Cabinet.

He is also the MP for Central Devon.

Outgoing prime ministers are able to recommend individuals for honours including peerages, knighthoods and damehoods as part of the British honours system.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Mr Stride said: “I am deeply honoured to have been awarded a Knighthood.

“It is an immense privilege to serve in public life and I am proud of what we achieved in government alongside so many talented colleagues. I look forward to continuing to serve my constituents and as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.

“I would also like to recognise the love and support of my family which has been the greatest blessing of all.”

Mr Stride continues to represent Central Devon in Parliament.
