Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s celebrated string ensemble is set to captivate Devon audiences this May with two intimate concerts as part of its acclaimed BSO On Your Doorstep tour. Partnering with Villages in Action, the ensemble will perform its latest programme, Musical Families, in Bovey Tracey and Bradninch, bringing the vibrant sounds of the string family to rural communities.
The tour begins on Thursday, 1st May at St Peter, St Paul & St Thomas Church in Bovey Tracey, in association with Bovey Paradiso Arts. The concert begins at 7:30pm, with guests invited to arrive early and enjoy a sparkling Prosecco and canapé reception to start the evening in style.
The following night, on Friday, 2nd May, the ensemble will perform at St Disen’s Church in Bradninch from 6:30pm, as part of the Bradninch Music Festival, now celebrating its 25th year.
The Musical Families programme promises a rich and varied selection, exploring the expressive potential of string instruments through music from across centuries and continents. Highlights include Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst, Coleridge-Taylor’s Novelletten, Karl Jenkins’ Palladio, Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, and Gershwin’s evocative Lullaby.
Twelve musicians from one of the UK’s most respected orchestras will guide the audience through this carefully curated journey, sharing personal stories and musical insights along the way.
Lucy Warren, of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, said she was excited about the tour: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Villages in Action to connect with audiences in Bovey Tracey and Bradninch. Our On Your Doorstep concerts are central to the BSO's mission - showcasing the extraordinary power of live music to bring people together. Musical Families offers something for everyone, and we can’t wait to share this experience with local communities.”
Richard Bull, of Bovey Paradiso Arts, said the event promises to be one to remember: “Our venue, St Peter, Paul & Thomas Church, will provide a stunning backdrop for what we expect to be a magical evening of live music. We’re delighted to be welcoming the BSO to our beautiful town.”
Simon Tytherleigh, from the Bradninch Music Festival, commented: “We’re honoured to welcome the BSO ensemble to St Disen’s in this landmark year for the festival. The church’s outstanding acoustics and beautiful setting make it the perfect venue. Bringing top-quality classical music to rural audiences is vital for building a love of music in future generations.”
The BSO On Your Doorstep initiative was created to bring outstanding live music to smaller communities, with mid-scale chamber concerts that are accessible, engaging, and family-friendly. These events showcase a broad spectrum of music, from beloved classical masterpieces to exciting contemporary compositions, performed by musicians known for their warmth, flair, and passion.
Luke Jeffery, from Villages in Action, reinforced the importance of rural access to the arts: “Bringing high-quality arts experiences to rural locations is central to our mission. We’re proud to be working with the BSO and our wonderful community partners in Bovey Tracey and Bradninch. These concerts are not to be missed.”
