On Saturday, 10th May 2025 a sponsored abseil down Chagford’s historic St Michaels Church tower will take place to raise funds for The Chagford and District Youth Project.

Running from 10am until 4pm, this will be a fun event with music, a tea tent, coffee van, ice cream stall and all the fun of the abseil! Bring a picnic and enjoy the day.

The Chagford and District Youth Project supports an after school group, a drama class and a drop in cafe every week during term time, as well as one off activities such as visiting climbing walls, archery, tree planting, guided moorland walks and there are current plans for a trip to the theatre. All this requires funding which, as regular local and national government funding has dried up, relies on donations and one off grants.

The project is currently running a £7,000 a year deficit which is unsustainable, so the sponsored abseil event is being held to raise funds, but also to raise awareness of the new “Friends of” Chagford and District Youth Project scheme which is being launched to encourage people to donate regularly:
Nattadon Friend £5/month
Meldon Friend £10/month
Cosden Friend £25/month or other

Trustee Niall MacLeod said: “Chagford and its surrounds is very lucky to have so many groups and activities but these are mainly for adults, with few outlets for teenagers. Being in a remote rural landscape does not help. The young are our future and need support and encouragement in these difficult times. We have some abseil places still available (ages 12-100!). Abseilers need to raise a minimum of £50. Please contact Ellie our youth worker to register and for further details: Chagfordyouth@gmail.com

The Youth Project is supported by Chagford Education and Leisure Trust, a registered charity no 1210637.
