A proud stallholder at the Widecombe Artisan Market, offering unique handmade crafts
The Widecombe Artisan Craft Market is celebrating a milestone this year as it marks its 40th anniversary.
Held in the historic Church House in Widecombe in the Moor, the market has grown from humble beginnings to become a staple of the local community and a popular attraction for visitors.
Founded by Christine Lamb in the summer of 1985, the market began with just a few stallholders, including Christine, who sold handmade children's clothes and hand-painted buttons.
Over time, the market expanded as more craftspeople joined, including a market gardener and a seamstress who created jackets.
Today, the market features a range of handmade crafts, from jewellery and pottery to textiles, handmade books, and Dartmoor photography.
Paula Woodward, a member of the market, said: “Widecombe is a great village for a moorland visit, as well as the market there is a good café and gift shops.”
The market runs every week from April to October, with 10 indoor stalls and 2-3 outdoor stalls available at each event.
There are around 20 regular stallholders, many of whom have been a part of the market for years, offering a dynamic and ever-changing selection of crafts each week.
Local artisans often feature Dartmoor-themed pieces, such as felted scenes, pottery inspired by the landscape, photography, and silver jewellery made from Dartmoor plants.
“We are all artisans, producing a variety of high-quality handmade crafts,” Paula added.
“The market has built a strong sense of community over the years. We all know each other, and it’s a very friendly place for visitors to come in.”
The historic Church House, a charming venue in its own right, provides the perfect backdrop for the market.
The village of Widecombe in the Moor, known for its picturesque setting on Dartmoor, also offers a café and gift shops, making it a great destination for a moorland visit.
The market runs 10.30am to 4.30pm, every Thursday from 17 April to 30 October.
The venue can be found at Church House, Widecombe-in-the-Moor, TQ13 7TA.
