Residents in Dartmoor and across the South West can now explore their local heritage like never before, thanks to a new online hub launched by Historic England.
The Local Heritage Hub, which went live on Wednesday 21 May, brings together nearly 400 digital pages covering every county, city, district and major town in England.
The resource is designed to help people uncover the rich and varied history of the places they live, work and visit.
From aerial photography and archive footage to podcasts, blogs and listings of historic buildings, the hub offers an in-depth look at communities past and present.
The Dartmoor section features sites such as HMP Dartmoor, Castle Drogo, and Tyrwhitt’s Wharf near Yelverton, alongside many other lesser-known locations and stories.
Those interested can explore the Dartmoor page directly at: www.historicengland.org.uk/local/locations/dartmoor
Launched during Local History Month, the initiative reflects growing public interest in heritage.
According to Historic England, 71 per cent of people want to see more recognition of local heritage, and 58 per cent agree it enhances their everyday lives.
“Understanding and connecting with local heritage is an important part of building strong communities,” said Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of Historic England.
“With this new service, we hope people across England will be able to explore hidden histories, reconnect with their surroundings, and feel a sense of pride in their local area.”
Ross Simmonds, Regional Director for the South West, added: “The South West is blessed with incredible local histories and heritage that continue to shape the area and its communities today.
“From the fields to the sea and the unexpected to the familiar, the Local Heritage Hub will help shine a light on hidden histories from across the region.
“Our region has some of the most beautiful heritage in the country, and it’s fantastic to see the new hub chart incredible social change and historic moments that make our villages, towns and cities such special places today.”
The platform will continue to grow, with more places and content added over time.
Historic England hopes it will encourage people to view familiar surroundings in new and surprising ways.
