One of Devon’s most cherished rural traditions is marking a major milestone this summer as the Christow Horticultural and Agricultural Society Show celebrates its 100th anniversary. First held in 1925, the event has grown into a much-loved community day, combining classic countryside fun with a generous commitment to local causes.
The Christow Show remains a shining example of a community event that honours its agricultural roots, supports vital causes, and brings people together through shared joy and purpose. As it enters its second century, the spirit of giving and celebration at the heart of the show is stronger than ever.
At the latest committee meeting, Vice President Paul Reddaway and Show Secretary Jan Deane presented a cheque for £1,000 to Hospiscare, this year’s chosen charity. The funds were raised from the 2024 Show and handed over to Sharon Collins, Area Fundraiser for Exeter and Mid Devon Hospiscare.
“The donations we make each year are the very ethos of what the Christow Show is all about,” explained Paul Reddaway. “The show is a day for the whole community, bringing together residents of Christow, neighbouring villages and visitors alike, to share in the fun and entertainment celebrating the countryside.”
The Christow Show has a proud history of giving back. Over the years, it has supported numerous local charities, and the tradition continues in its centenary year with Marie Curie named as the 2025 beneficiary.
This year's centenary show takes place on 16th August from 9:00am to 6:00pm and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Organisers are planning a packed programme that honours its century-long legacy while introducing new attractions to delight visitors of all ages.
Returning favourites include terrier racing, the lively 5K cross country race, children’s sports, a sheepdog demonstration, and the always-popular classic car and tractor parade. In true centenary spirit, special additions for 2025 are also being lined up to ensure the day is a fitting tribute to the show’s golden history.
Kicking off the celebrations is the Grand Centenary Quiz Night on 20th June at 7:30 pm at Teign Valley Community Hall. With a £7 entry per person (including a light supper), a raffle and cash bar, the quiz promises to be a lively and entertaining evening. Teams of up to six are welcome, and all proceeds will support the main show.
