A new electric bike rental scheme is set to launch in Totnes on 20 June, offering residents and visitors a greener, more accessible way to get around the historic South Devon town. The Catbikes initiative is part of South Hams District Council’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable transport, reduce carbon emissions, and support local communities.

The scheme will introduce e-bikes at eight designated bases across Totnes:

  • Shady Gardens

  • Rotherfold Square

  • Steamer Quay

  • Weston Lane, Bridgetown

  • Totnes Leisure Centre

  • Follaton House

  • Totnes Railway Station

Each location will be fitted with dedicated bike racks, and the bikes are set to be delivered and tested at all sites in preparation for the official launch.

The scheme is being delivered in partnership with Active Cycling Projects, operators of the AppBike platform, and is funded by a UK Government grant aimed at increasing cycling uptake in rural areas. Initially running as a three-year trial, the project could become a permanent fixture depending on its success.

To access the bikes, users will need to download the AppBike app available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, and register. Signing up is free, and riders can choose from flexible pricing options: £2 per 30 minutes or £10 for six hours. A £5 monthly membership makes the first 30 minutes of a ride free.

Cllr Julian Brazil, South Hams Lead Member for Community Services, Operations and Leisure, welcomed the launch:

“The battery-powered bikes will make it easier to travel around the town, so people can see Totnes from a new perspective and coast up the town’s hardest hills.
They’re a fun way to get around, and people who are keen to get on a bike now won’t need to be put off by the hills. They’re comfortable, and the beauty of e-bikes is that they open up cycling to everyone, even those who haven’t cycled for a long time.”

Cllr John Birch, South Hams Executive Member for Economy, also praised the initiative’s potential economic impact:

“We are hopeful that the Catbikes will prove to be something of an attraction and bring even more people into Totnes. It’s such a vibrant community, with a fantastic array of shops, markets, restaurants, cafes, pubs and more. It should give people the opportunity to explore the town from a different perspective and support our local economy.”

Totnes, known for its eco-conscious community and independent spirit, is seen as a fitting location for the e-bike pilot. The hilly landscape has historically been a challenge for cyclists, but the power-assisted Catbikes aim to make two-wheeled travel a more viable option for all ages and fitness levels.

The council hopes the scheme will encourage residents to opt for sustainable travel over car journeys, especially for short trips around town, aligning with its broader climate action goals.
