Teen trailblazer honoured in prestigious St Boniface awards for community service

A 15-year-old student from Exeter has become the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious St Boniface Medal for her outstanding dedication to mental health advocacy and community service.
Caitlin James, a pupil at St Luke’s Church of England Secondary School, was recognised for her voluntary work as a Mental Health Champion during a special service at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday, 7th June. She was one of 11 individuals admitted to the historic Company of St Boniface by the Bishop of Exeter.
The St Boniface Awards celebrate those who go above and beyond in their churches, schools, and communities, both in the UK and overseas. Named after Devon’s patron saint – St Boniface, born in Crediton – the awards honour individuals who live out values of service, compassion, and faith.
Caitlin’s motivation to serve others began at a young age, but deepened following a personal loss.
“I feel honoured to get this award. It’s amazing to have this sense of accomplishment for what I do,” she said.
“Ever since I was little I have always wanted to help people in the community. Since my mum died it inspired me to be better. Instead of letting it get to me, I pushed forward and I tried to make a difference in the community.
“My dad has been brilliant at supporting me with everything I wanted to do. I couldn’t have asked for better parents. I know I’m making my mum proud, which is lovely.”
Caitlin also shared a message of encouragement for her peers: “Even if you feel like you are not making a difference, you really are. The little things do matter and over time it does give you a great sense of accomplishment in yourself.”
Among the other award recipients this year was 80-year-old Irene Hicks from St Peter’s Church in Lamerton, who famously abseiled down the church tower on her birthday to raise funds and helped establish a warm gathering space in the church called “Coffee and Company”.
Mary Casey, another honouree from St Gregory’s Church in Seaton, was inspired by the biblical story of the loaves and fishes to launch the Freedom Cafe 16 years ago. The cafe provides free meals and drinks and donates surplus funds back to the community.
“I felt so strongly about acting out the story of the loaves and fishes from the Bible, it wasn’t enough for me to just go to church,” she explained.
“The joy of it is that we have been able to give so much money back to the community... The Lord has given me so much in my life, even though my life has not always been easy. My faith for me is serving others.”
Other awardees included David Netherway of St James’ Church, Swimbridge, known for transforming part of the churchyard into a garden for the local pre-school, and Fred Webb, who served as a churchwarden for 40 years at St John the Baptist Church in Marldon. Fred also organised “Mystery Tours” for the community, combining visits to churches and pubs.
The Bishop of Exeter, the Rt. Rev’d Dr Mike Harrison, praised the group’s spirit of service:
“All the recipients have varied stories but what they have in common is generosity towards others. They have realised that it is not about solemn duty, it is what we were born for and called to. It is the greatest opportunity and fulfilment.
Thanks be to God for these people, these excellent exemplars who inspire, delight and instruct us.”
The 2024 recipients span a diverse range of backgrounds, ages, and ministries, unified by their deep commitment to helping others.
