Tavistock travel team gears up for high-stakes race across Cornwall

Staff from the Tavistock branch of Newell’s Travel are set to swap suitcases for suspense as they prepare to compete in an extraordinary charity challenge - Race Across the County - on Sunday, 7 September 2025.

Inspired by the hit TV series Race Across the World, the event will see all 11 branches of Newell’s Travel, including Tavistock, racing across Cornwall using only a sealed envelope of cryptic clues, a limited fuel budget, and their own wits. With unexpected checkpoints, quirky detours, and community-based challenges, it’s a high-energy test of teamwork, resourcefulness, and local knowledge.

For Tavistock’s travel experts, the race is more than just a thrilling detour from the daily routine, it’s a way to support a vital cause. All funds raised will go to Penhaligon’s Friends, a Cornish charity that provides support to bereaved children and their families across the region.

“This isn’t your average Sunday drive,” says Lisa Hawken, Manager and Events Co ordinator at Newell’s Travel. “It’s all about raising as much as we can for a brilliant cause and embracing the adventurous nature of our industry!”

As each branch sets off from their local office, teams will face surprise tasks and challenges, all while racing toward the finish line in a mystery location somewhere in Cornwall. And it’s not just about speed: creativity and problem-solving will be key.

“All donations go directly towards helping children rebuild their lives after bereavement,” says Bryony Penberthy, Regional Sales Manager. “We’re incredibly proud to support Penhaligon’s Friends and shine a light on the life-changing work they do across Cornwall.”

The public is encouraged to show support by donating in honour of their local branch. The first branch to finish not only wins bragging rights, but could also reward its supporters with a chance to win two seats on a Newell’s Travel coach holiday, through a special prize draw.
