Residents, organisations and local stakeholders are being encouraged to have their say on how planning decisions are made in Dartmoor, as Dartmoor National Park Authority launches a public consultation on two key planning documents.
Planning decisions affect many aspects of everyday life and as the planning authority for one of the UK’s most cherished landscapes, Dartmoor National Park Authority plays a crucial role in balancing the need for development with the responsibility to protect what makes Dartmoor special.
The Authority is currently updating its Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) and another planning guidance document, and is inviting feedback on the draft versions. The consultation runs from 14th July to 25th August.
A spokesperson for the Authority said:
“Planning affects everyone in one way or another – the homes we live in, the roads we use, the open spaces we enjoy. As the planning authority for this unique landscape, it is our role to ensure we protect what's special about Dartmoor but ensure we're meeting the development needs for the future.”
The draft Statement of Community Involvement outlines how the Authority involves communities, individuals, and organisations in planning matters, including planning applications and the development of new policies.
The updated draft includes important changes to reflect new legislation, government policy, and best practice in community engagement. Notably, it proposes a change in how residents are notified of planning applications: letters to neighbouring properties will no longer be sent, but A4 site notices will continue to be displayed on or near proposed development sites.
The Authority is asking whether these proposed changes will still ensure meaningful public engagement and is seeking suggestions for further improvements.
“Your feedback will shape the final versions and will be shared with Authority Members before the documents are finalised,” the spokesperson added.
The consultation presents a valuable opportunity for people who live in, work in, or care about Dartmoor to influence how future planning decisions are made.
