Let food be thy medicine

Hippo bistro brings food, art and wellbeing together in Dartmoor

Colourful breakfast options

Food lovers in Dartmoor have a new reason to celebrate with the opening of Hippo Bistro in Moretonhampstead – a dining space where nutrition, sustainability, and creativity meet.

Hippo is named after Hippocrates, the Greek physician often referred to as the father of modern medicine, whose belief in the healing power of food underpins the restaurant’s ethos. Founded by artist and naturopathic nutritional therapist Ione Rucquoi, Hippo is more than a bistro: it is a philosophy of eating well for both body and mind.

“We're passionate about a kinder food chain that benefits our community and planet, working with businesses who share our values to ensure every dish reflects our dedication to quality, health, and sustainability,” says Ione.

The menu changes seasonally and is carefully designed around whole, natural foods sourced from local farms and producers. Every dish is created with a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fibre, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, making it both delicious and nourishing. Even the indulgent Maitake tempura comes with a twist: organic mushrooms from Dart Valley Fungi, fried in pomace oil instead of inflammatory seed oils, wrapped in gluten-free batter, and paired with a creamy vegan cashew dipping sauce.

Diners are already singing its praises, with reviews describing how they left feeling “nourished and light, happy and already thinking about their return visit”.

But Hippo is about more than food. The bistro doubles as an art space, currently showcasing Jane Hirst’s exhibition Two Fields and a Gate until the end of November. Its relaxed, art-filled setting creates a warm and inclusive environment for visitors to enjoy everything from weekday lunches to evening tapas and cocktails.

The new venture is located in the old Bell Inn pub; the earliest recording of the building comes from 1799 but it is believed the structures may have been a group of 16th century cottages before then. The building was nearly completely destroyed by fire in 1845 before being rebuilt and used nearly 100 years later as a drinking and wrestling venue for soldiers during WWII. The building still retains the 'painted wall' – a mural believed to have been created by POWs in the 1800s.

Hippo is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, with special evenings beginning this autumn – including Thursday ‘Hippo’crite bar nights with cocktails and tapas, and Friday dinners by booking only.

For those planning ahead, Hippo also welcomes private events and Christmas party bookings.
