Award-winning Devon folk singer Jim Causley will bring his celebrated show Songs of Devon to a rather unusual venue next month – the heart of Newton Abbot Museum.
The performance, taking place on Monday, 13th October, is part of Newton Abbot Town Council’s new Music in the Museum series, which is bringing live music events to Newton’s Place, the town’s museum and community space.
More than simply a folk singer, Causley is one of the best-known names in the British folk scene. The proud Devonian has released a string of acclaimed albums since his debut in 2005, earning six BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominations, including “Singer of the Year.” His warm vocals, knowledge of local folk traditions and engaging performances have made him a favourite with audiences across the UK.
Natalie Hicks, events organiser for Newton Abbot Town Council, said:
“We’ve started a new venture this year at Newton’s Place, home of the museum. We want to bring live music to the middle of Newton Abbot and we have an exciting programme of music lined up over the next twelve months. We started with our first gig earlier this year with a fantastic show from the Shanty band, Old Time Sailors. Now we are hosting one of the country’s leading folk musicians, Jim Causley, who will be performing songs all about Devon over the centuries – perfect in the setting of the town’s museum.”
Charlotte Dixon, Curator of Newton Abbot Museum, added:
“The museum is an ideal place for live music as the acoustics of such a magnificent building (formally a Victorian church) are perfect for both vocals and music. What better place to hear tales of old Devon than in the museum which is full of local stories and fascinating events throughout history. We are delighted to welcome Jim to share his knowledge of interesting characters and intriguing events and we look forward to welcoming you to share this exciting evening of entertainment.”
The event begins at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £10 and are available online at Ticket Tailor or in person at the museum.
