West Devon Borough Council has announced the successful completion of another year of its Junior Life Skills programme – an initiative designed to equip young people with essential life skills through interactive, hands-on learning.
Aimed at Year 6 pupils, the programme helps children gain practical knowledge to handle real-life situations safely and confidently. It forms part of the Council’s wider commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of residents across the borough.
This year’s sessions covered a wide range of topics, including first aid, fire safety, online and telephone safety, lifesaving techniques, and how to stay safe on Dartmoor. Each workshop was led by experts from local organisations, ensuring pupils received high-quality and engaging training.
The success of the programme was made possible thanks to the support of several local and national partners, including Devon and Cornwall Police, Dartmoor National Park Authority, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, the RNLI, National Grid, EE, Dartmoor Rangers, Woodside Animal Sanctuary, Wales and West Utilities, and the Royal Life Saving Society. Fusion Leisure also played a key role in helping to coordinate the events.
Cllr Jane Elliott, West Devon Borough Council’s Lead Member for Health and Community Wellbeing, said:
“We are incredibly proud of the success of this year's Junior Life Skills events. The positive feedback from both students and teachers highlights the importance of these programmes in preparing our young people for the future.
“The events are a testament to our commitment to the well-being and development of our young residents. We believe that by providing them with these essential skills, we are helping to build a safer and more resilient community.”
Junior Life Skills continues to grow in popularity, with schools across West Devon welcoming the chance for pupils to learn lessons that could one day save lives.
